How to Match Two Crystal Bowls to Create a Binaural Beat

Steps to Create a Binaural Pair of Bowls

a. Measure the Frequency of Your Starting Bowl

  • Use an app such as Tuner T1 to accurately measure the bowl’s frequency
  • Example: My starting bowl frequency is 220 Hz (A 3rd Octave A)

b. Explore Binaural Frequencies and Choose your Preference

  • Visit the MyNoise Binaural Generator
  • Using headphones, explore frequencies between 1 to 32 Hz to discover your preferred range
  • Note down the your preference for the frequency that provides the desired effect
    • Example: My preferred binaural frequency is 4 Hz

c. Convert Desired Hertz Range to the Crystal Tones Note and Cents

  • Since the difference in Hz for the matching bowl can be either less than or more than the starting bowl and still produce the desired effect, calculate the matching bowls’ potential frequency in Hertz by first subtracting, then also adding the desired Hz  from your starting bowl: 
    • Subtracting Example: 220 Hz - 4 Hz = 216 Hz
    • Addition Example: 220 Hz + 4 Hz = 224 Hz 
  • Use the frequency table below to convert these frequencies into notes and cents using the closest match in the table:
    • Example: 216 Hz = 3rd Octave A -30 cents
    • Example: 224 Hz = 3rd Octave A +30 cents

d. Find Matching Bowls Using Notes and Cents

  • Search inventory filtering by these note and cents values:
    • Example: Filter for Note A, Cents -30
    • Example: Filter for Note A, Cents +30
  • The octave needs to be the same as your starting bowl to have a similar effect, but since you can't filter for octave you can filter for similar sizes, but be careful to validate the octave is the same when you play the video 

e. Experience the Binaural Effect

  • Test the binaural beat by playing your starting bowl alongside the potential matching bowl’s recording or video

Difference Between True Binaural and Monaural Beats

  • Binaural Beats: Created by delivering two slightly different frequencies separately to each ear, causing the brain to perceive a third frequency
  • Monaural Beats: Both frequencies are played simultaneously being heard by both ears, creating beats within the air rather than in the brain

How to Achieve a True Binaural Effect
